“Someone pour me up a double shot of Whiskey!” -Shaboozey- A Bar Song

Whiskey or whisky?

A timeless debate that one will realize doesn’t matter as both are correct depending on where they originate.  Ireland and the USA have opted for the spelling “whiskey” whereas Japan, Scotland and Canada have omitted the “E” and settled on “whisky”, with these two also come bourbon and scotch.

“I’ll take my whiskey neat”

– Hozier – Too Sweet

In asking any whiskey/whisky drinker how they prefer their whiskey you will hear either on the rocks or neat but to ask the type of whiskey will reveal that it is known to be an umbrella term for a spirit made from fermented grain aged in wooden casks or barrels usually oak and these types depend on the country or region of their origin.

Irish whiskey

If you know Jameson, you know Irish Whiskey! This smooth triple-distilled spirit is a blend of rich pot still and fine-grain whiskeys made exclusively in Ireland, which is argued to be the origin of whiskey itself.  Many reviews have praised the makers’ products, rating the brand as middle-shelf.

Scotch whisky

On to Scotland, the next argued birthplace of whisky where they call it Scotch. The list of the brands produced in this region is enough to give us the rest of this article! Most are made using either malt or grain and aged in oak barrels for at least three years and as a rule, each bottle must be labelled with an age statement that reflects the youngest aged whisky in the blend.
